One Year of Blogging Wrap Up

Hard to believe we are almost at one year of blogging. Amy and I decided to start a blog last year at a New Year's Party. It's hard to believe that we've done so many projects. The best part of writing a blog means that your projects actually get finished at some point. That means a lot less projects that get ignored and left behind. I have to give Rob a lot of credit. He did four out of five of these projects. The lampshade was the only project that I did 100% alone out of all of these. He's been on fire this year. I'm so proud of us hard work and effort he has put into these projects.

Pottery Barn Kids Knock Off Valentine's Pouch

Is it to early to talk about Valentine's Day? I mean the stores have had stuff out for weeks now right. I have always loved the little chair pouches that Pottery Barn Kids has for practically every holiday out there. I decided to try one of my own in a no sew version after picking up two larger felt hearts at Michaels. The felt hearts were around 1.50 each and then the ribbon was on sale for $0.59 cents. Great deal!

I simply strung through the polyester ribbon through the slots in the felt hearts. Then tied it around Wynn's desk that we redid a few months back. I attached some felt heart stickers to it. Here is my inspiration from Pottery Barn Kids:

The total cost for my version was $2.50. I bought the two larger hearts and ribbon and had the smaller hearts from a previous purchase. The PBK version is $19.

Ice Cream Party Straws

I always use paper straws at parties. This may be why I always have so many leftover to do other projects. I picked up some toothpicks that had ice cream cones on it at Joann's at the end of the summer for a quarter. Not bad! I knew I could figure out a way to use them for Wynn's ice cream party. I simply cut off the bottom half of the toothpick and glued them to the straws to jazz them up.

Ice Cream Party Wreath

I think I may need to go into rehab for wreath making. I never knew I would love to find new ways to make them. I picked up some coasters and a ice cream sign at Jo-Ann Fabrics at the end of the summer for a grand total of $2.00. Then I picked up a two dollar wire wreath frame. I took apart the sign that originally had the celebrate sign and ice cream cone wired together. Then I glued the pink coasters around the wire frame. Then simply glued the two pieces of the sign to the wreath. Another project completed during a children's show...I think this one was PB& J Otter. ;)

I think for $4.00 is it pretty cute and cheery. I am not a fan of winter, and I think this is my way of getting a feeling of summer. Maybe I should move to Australia during the winter months here. :)

Ice Cream Party - Favors

Are you sick of my ice cream party posts in the midst of Winter yet? We are only having a handful of kiddos at Wynn's party, and I was trying to come up with an ice cream related favor. I decided that these favors needed to do double duty as decorations and favors. This way I would be able to stick to a reasonable budget.

I ended up taking three paper mache cones that were just over a dollar a piece. I was so excited when I found these at Michaels. They are significantly less expensive than their Styrofoam counterparts and they can be filled up. That's when I thought I'd make some ice cream cones and then fill up the inside of the cone with a treat for the kids.

I had recently found some sidewalk chalk at Target on clearance. I had figured I would somehow incorporate it into the favors for the party. I figured it would come in handy come spring time. One pack of 16 pieces of chalk was $1.98 not bad. I split it into three separate bags and tied a ribbon around them. Then I placed them inside of the cone. On top of the cone I added a tissue paper pom to make an ice cream cone. I had gotten a large package of these poms at Jo-Ann's at the end of the summer for $5.00. I only needed to use three out of the package so it was a good deal.

The total cost for these favors was approximately $7.00, which means it will come out to cost a little over $2 a child. I think because they serve two purposes that it is even a better deal.

Yarn Wreath with Felt Flower

I wanted to create a quick and easy festive wreath. I picked up a straw wreath form, yarn and some felt from Hobby Lobby. I simply wrapped the wreath with the yarn, and then cut out leaves from felt to make the poinsettia. It was quick and easy and I made it while watching Homeland. I think it took me longer than usual because I found my self in a TV trance and not wrapping and watching instead.

I had some leftover ribbon, so I used that to make something for the wreath to hang from. Then I added a leftover sticker to the middle of the flower. This entire project cost $5. Not too shabby.
