Just make sure you sand it down so that the polyurethane is taken off (I used a hand sander with 60 grit paper) if not the stain as well. The hardest part is the intricate detailed parts. After that paint it with a brush let it dry and sand it with 220 or 320 grit sand paper. I did three coats then used minwax semi-gloss polyurethane that came in a spray can.
