Functional Cabinet Storage by Rob & Megan

We have a large cabinet in our kitchen that had a system of three wire drawers installed. They were not functional at all.  We could not pull out the drawers as intended because the support was only on the right side.  As you can tell from the photo below the left side is sagging from the weight of the items in the shelves.  

After checking out the selection at Lowe's we purchased three sets of sliding drawer hardware and the brackets to attach to the back of the cabinet.  After we cleaned out the cabinet our daughter, Wynn, thought it would be fun to show off the usable space. Then Rob began to attach the tracks to the side of the cabinet.

This came out to be $32.00. We had a lot of leftover wood and OSB from other projects.  Rob was able to build three shelves for the cabinet.  

Rob then added the tracks to the bottom of the shelves he built.   Once all the tracks were installed here is what the cabinet looked like afterwards.

We then remembered we had a roll of wallpaper from a previous project.  We lined the drawers with that for now to cover up the wood.

Painting the shelves is the next step...but for now these are a huge improvement for our cabinet.  

Total Cost  - $32 dollars for the sliding drawer hardware from Lowe's.

Now we have to share seven random things about ourselves...

1. We are a family blog - Rob and Chris are brothers that are married to Megan and Amy

2. We live ten minutes apart so we share tools and materials....any anything else.

3. We all love sports.  Amy dominates most of all the bowl and basketball pools we particpate in.

4. Before this blog our husbands even though we love them would always complete their projects until about 90% of it was done and move on to the next one. Now that we have a blog and needed final product pictures they are completing them 100%  :)

5. Megan & Rob's daughter is named Wynn because Rob is competitive and loves to Wynn. If they had a boy instead it would have been Ty.  No losers in the Vaughn family..lol.

6. Both Rob and Chris have both coached their high school basketball team since graduation.  Chris is still the coach there.

7. Amy is a nurse in the PACU at a local hospital (hopefully I used the write medical acronym)

Shutter Stand by Amy & Chris

Chris and I went to a store near us that sells reclaimed & reusable pieces called Second Chance.  We came across shutters and thought of a great way to re-use them.  Last summer we bought a water feature for our deck but we haven't found a table to place it on.

We bought the shutters and decided to make a stand...I spray painted the shutter green...then chris nailed the shutters together. Chris got left over wood from his brother, cut the wood into square pieces to use as the bottom and top.  He then used gorilla glue to glue the wood pieces to the shutter. A coat of polyurethane to finish the project off and viola....

Materials:

Shutters $10
Valspar spray paint (2 cans) $8
Wood: free

Craft Challenge at Planned in Pencil

Rope Turned Nautical Theme Curtain Rod by Chris & Amy

It will be two years next month that Chris and I moved into our home, and for two years we have not had curtains in our "formal" living room. I changed my mind on the paint color a million times and did not know how I wanted the room decorated. As I was putting pieces together the room organically evolved into a shabby chic/coastal vibe. Our window treatments were last on the list and I was determined to put something up. I was inspired by a photo I found from vintagerevival.blogspot.com. First I spray painted all the hardware with leftover spray paint. Chris put the hooks up for me:) We put the rope up first so we could make sure it was even on both sides. Afterwards, we fed the curtains through the rope and tied the sides around boat cleats!!! After two years its finally complete and we couldnt be happier:)

Necklace Organizer with Anthropologie Hardware by Rob & Megan

I was in need of some serious necklace organization. With my sister becoming a Stella & Dot stylist last year my jewelry collection has increased.  I was eyeing up some hardware that was on sale at Anthropologie and was inspired by this pin....

Our garage contains plenty of extra pieces of wood. So I grabbed a length I thought would work.

Rob predrilled the holes for the knobs for me because he rocks.  He also routed the edges because he said he did want to have it with plain edges. He's turning into an interior decorator. 

I grabbed the Valspar Woodlawn colonial gray paint that we had left over from the dresser and china cabinet projects. 

We put the knobs through and then Rob cut off the excess so it would lay flat against the wall.

Then it was hung on the wall and tested out right away.  I love it.

Barn Find Complete - Rob & Megan

Our $25.00 thrift barn find is complete.  Here is the dresser two weeks ago right after I bought it. It instantly became the catch all for the other projects.

Here is the dresser after Rob sanded it down. There was a lot of wood putty used to fix the corners that were in bad shape.  The back leg was broken too, so that was fixed as well.

We used the same Valspar Woodlawn Colonial Gray that we used on the china cabinet project earlier.  Then Rob added a simple two stripe design on the left side using leftover white paint and sample size Valspar's Pale Butter paint.

Here is the final product.  Don't you love the chalk drawings on our driveway to go along with it?  That's what we spent this beautiful 75 degree day doing while Rob finished up the dresser.

Gray China Cabinet by Rob & Megan

Rob and I have become the newest Craigslist stalkers. We are looking daily to see if there is a piece of furniture we can try something new with and transform it. We found this china cabinet on Craigslist the other day for a steal and the owner offered to deliver it for a small fee. We bought it sight unseen and hoped for the best.  We were excited to see at delivery that the piece was in great condition overall.

We then went and checked out some Valspar paint at Lowe's. We narrowed it down to two colors using the sample sizes. What a great deal it is to use those at about $3 a container.  We decided to use Valspar's Woodlawn Colonial Gray in flat paint. 

Rob took off all of the doors, glass, and the back of the cabinet. The back was very flimsy so he decided to replace that later on.  The center section of glass was not able to be removed, so Rob taped it off instead. Rob used CitrusStrip stripping gel with steel wool to remove the layers on the cabinet before painting. He actually found it to not be his favorite product due to residue that remained afterwards and got in the way during painting.

It is hard to tell in this picture, but Rob has gotten the stain off using the stripping gel.

Here are the doors and cabinet drying after two coats of paint and one coat of polyurethane.



We went to Home Depot and Lowe's to check out potential hardware choices. Well we ended up having to order new handles online because the standard width is 3 inches, and of course our handles needed to be four inches. I snagged two standard satin nickel knobs for the doors and then ordered from DirectDoorHardware's Residential Essentials Cabinet Pull for the four new handles.

We have ordered this fabric from the etsy shop Decorate 23

The plan is to use this fabric to provide a better looking backing for the cabinet.  Rob actually was able to attach the fabric to the original backing of the cabinet.

Paint It Party

Our Barn Find

We have a place called the Westminster Rescue Mission Thrift Barn  in our town. I had heard about it through friends before but had never ventured the whole ten minutes from my house to check it out. After a minute inside I was very happy that I had found this place.

I found this dresser/console/credenza whatever you'd like to call it hidden deep beneath three desks and an end table of the barn. It was dark and the floor is dirt, which did not make the best condition for viewing the condition of the piece.

It has a particle board top to it and a partially broken back right leg, but for $25 bucks I didn't want to pass it up. I loved the handles and the legs and it reminded me of this dresser in the beautiful nursery from Young House Love that I had pinned on Pinterest.

I had brought the cabinet home in the midst of Rob working on the gray china cabinet, so it immediately became an additional work bench.  See I knew it would come in handy. 

While I love the bold yellow above to save some money we are going to go with the Valspar Woodlawn Colonial Gray that we used for the china cabinet we are currently finishing up.  We would like to do our guest room (maybe next baby room) in a yellow, white and gray color palette.  

We hope to get started on this project this weekend.  I can't wait to show you how it turns out.
