Wall Decor for a Buck

I found a framed piece of nursery decor at a consignment sale for a dollar. I liked the frame and decided to snag it for a future project. I figured I would be able to use it in Wynn's room as I adjust her decor a bit.  

I had this piece of scrapbook paper leftover from a previous project. After attaching it to the previous artwork I placed the Silhouette vinyl seahorse on top of it.  I also gave the frame a coating of white paint.

Here is the artwork when I first bought it. It said on the back that it was from Target so I'm sure it was probably between 10-15 dollars if I could guess. I had to cut open the back cardboard of it to get into the frame.  It was very easy to push it back into place after I made my changes to it.

Now I have a new piece of wall decor for a $1.  Can't beat that price!  Thanks for stopping by! I hope you have a great weekend.  It is supposed to be a hot one here in Maryland.

Easy and Thrifty Artwork by Megan

I am working on a gray & yellow bedroom for our house. Of course I haven't really thought about that much past the dresser we did a few months back.  I have been pondering some ideas for wall decor or art too. I had a stash of pictures that I used before and wanted to reuse some of the frames.  


I took the frame and removed the artwork. I used some Valspar gray spray paint and covered the frame. Then I used the free printable that I found from Pinterest to place in the frame now.  Here is the link to the free printable: Persnickety Prints.  I am hoping that one day this room will be for another child, so I like the Love You in this printable.

 I am going to be leaving the back without backing, so when I place it on the wall the color will show through. I like the look of the saying floating in the frame.  

I already the frame and spray paint, and the printable was free. I am a fan of projects that are fun and are thrifty.  I am excited to add it to the other items I already have in mind for the walls in the room.  Thanks for checking it out.

Wynn's Room by Rob and Megan

Before we did many DIY or home improvement projects around our house we completed the nursery for our daughter, Wynn.  This was also before we had a blog, so we thought we would share it because it is our favorite room in the house.

Here is a photo of the room the day we moved in, and at the point we began putting the nursery together it still looked like this a year later.  Rob began by laying Brazillian Koa flooring in the room and in the closet.  We then bought a zebra rug from Overstock for around $60.00.  That's our boy Barkley not looking very happy.  

 Rob then used mdf board to create wainscoting around the room.  He framed out the wainscoting but left it as plain wall inside each "box"   We painted it white and then painted above with Valspar's Woodlawn Silver Brook. We knew we were having a girl but liked the look of blue in her room.  

We ordered a decal with Wynn's name from A Hint of Chic Boutique on Etsy  and a ribbon mobile from Polka Dot Skies on Etsy. Our furniture is by Cocoon and we purchased it through WayFair.

 I framed coordinating scrapbook paper because I couldn't find any artwork that really matched the look that I was going for.

 I was able to get a matching bookcase from Target and decorated it with some of the gifts Wynn received at the shower.

Here is the finished room. We got some drapes from Tuesday Morning and added a chenille glider from Babies R US.  I guess I should take an after picture since Wynn is now two and using this room. Just picture books all over the place instead of on the bookshelf.  :)

Lampshade Redo - A Nap Time Project by Megan

Last week I shared a tutorial for how to recover a lampshade using fabric. We had finally moved our Gray Barn Find Dresser that we had done a few weeks back into a bedroom.  I had a matching lamp base from the project before that had a plain white shade in the room.  I went to JoAnn fabrics and purchased a 1/2 yard of outdoor fabric for $5.00.  

I was able to recover the lampshade in approximately thirty minutes using my tutorial.  I was pretty happy with the way it turned out and I think it looks nice on the dresser.  I also ordered a new graphic print from Doodle Graphics shop on Etsy.  It says "A Bushel and a Peck and a Hug Around the Neck".  I love this song and my daughter, Wynn, now requests that we sing it all the time.

Not a bad lamp transformation for $5.00 worth of fabric.  We are excited with how it turned out.

Ceiling Medallion into Wall Decor: A Nap Time Project by Megan

Here at our house we savor nap time. It's our time to run around and get some projects done in the three hours we don't have to chase a toddler around.  I did this project in about thirty total minutes from start to finish. It's a beautiful afternoon here in Maryland, so it was nice to be outside doing something. Rob and his friend are currently on the other side of the house ripping up our deck and replacing it. I think I got the better deal project wise during this nap time.


I have seen a lot of projects involving ceiling medallions.  I was inspired by a few pins I have found on Pinterest, and in this post by Furniture Clue they share many interesting ideas.

At an after the winter holidays sale at the Home Depot they had some on clearance.  I snagged this one for $10 bucks.  I am working on the wall behind our bed in our master bedroom. It always seems to me that we never really think about that room because it is where we collapse after working on projects for every other room. 

First I spray painted it using Catalina Mist by Krylon. Any excuse to get outside during nap time is fine by me. I already had the spray paint from a previous project, so I was happy to have a color that worked for the room.

Then I used a chalkboard circle that I found at Michael's for a $1.50.  The best part was that it had a yarn piece on it for hanging, which helped me hang it on the wall later on.

Using a glue gun I adhered the chalkboard circle to the back of the medallion.

I then took it to our room. We are planning on painting this wall...it's on the master to do list. We will see when that happens.  Anyways, we did this headboard project a few months back and the space above looked empty. I am now in search of something to place on either side of the medallion. Possibly two more medallions in a different color. If you have any ideas...suggestions are appreciated.

Lampshade Redo by Rob & Megan

I had found this lampshade at Lowe's after Christmas for$ 3.75 and it is approximately a 12 inch shade.  It originally came with a red and white plaid trim at the top and bottom, and that was why it was on clearance. It was easy to remove the trim and begin a new project.

I purchased this fabric on sale at Joann's a few weeks back. I thought it would look great on the shade. The fabric for 1 yard was $10.00 and I used about half of a yard.

I had pinned a wonderful tutorial by the The Creativity Exchange on how to recover a lampshade a while back. The tutorial is wonderful, and I was able to follow it very easily.

The first step was to trace the shape of the shade on the fabric with pencil. We flipped the fabric over and rolled the shade beginning at the seam and back around. Drawing a faint line on the fabric alongside the top first, and then rolling it again drawing a line along the bottom. The top and bottom of the shade were two different sizes. Then I cut out the fabric as you can see below.

What I did next was take the end piece and hot glue it along the seam.  Then I wrapped the fabric completely around the shade and glued the other end down as well.

Then I used hot glue to glue around the top where I left the least amount of extra fabric. It worked out better for me this way. I used clothespins to hold down the areas that I was gluing. Then I cut around the metal pieces of the shade.

I then did the same thing on the bottom working my way around and pulling the fabric tight. I was pleased with the final product considering it was my first try, and I hope to find another base at Goodwill or similar store. For this I used my lamp I already have to show you the shade on a lamp.

TV Stand Redo using PVC Pipe by Chris & Amy

We have a large brown sectional couch in our main living room with red accents, but I felt like the brown was taking over. Our couch, tv stand and side tables are brown, I could not take it any longer!! So I decided to paint our tv stand to give the room a pop of color.

I started by painting the tv stand with a primer. I only used one coat, I should have used two because I had to give the stand 3 coats of red. After the 3 coats of red, I took PVC pipe ( with the help of my amazing brother in law) and cut 1/4 inch pieces. I sprayed painted the PVC rings oil rubbed bronze. Once I created a design I was satisfied with, I started hot glueing each piece....Here it is...

Materials/Cost:

3 paint samples: $9 (Lowes-Posh Red)

Armoire Turned Toy Locker by Rob & Megan

We were able to purchase a pine armorie for $40 dollars.  We were looking for better storage options for toys and dress up clothes in our basement.  Here is the armoire before anything was done to it.

First, Rob took the doors off and sanded down the entire piece than painted Posh Red from Valspar, left over from Buffet an earlier project.   Then Rob took the back off which was two pieces and replaced it with one sheet of 1/4 inch plywood.  Stenciled on in polar bear white a design than painted over it with the same Posh Red as the armiore to add a tone on tone look. Made a top shelf and divider out of 1x10 and 1x8 pine board.  Attatched them together then inserted and anchored them to bottom and sides of the armiore.  Here is the after:

We were going for the locker style look and hope to add some baskets and hooks to hang all those dress up clothes.  :)

Starburst Mirror

I wanted to re create the famous starburst mirror which can go for up to a few hundred bucks. All you need is a small mirror size of your choice, skewers, mirror hook, spray paint and of course my best friend the hot glue gun!

For two starburst mirrors:

Variety of mirror sizes - Michaels $3
 Skewers - already had at home but can be bought anywhere for about $2
