Making Baby Food

Have you ever tried to make your own baby food? This was my first experience. I am now kicking myself for not doing this before. I guess I never really knew how easy it really was to make, and believe me if I can make it with twins and a four year old around me it must be easy.

I purchased a book from Amazon for my kindle. It is a lot easier for me to have my cookbooks on my Kindle, and they actually cost a little less too. I also found some great recipes and tips on websites. I thought I would share them with you.

This is the book I have on my Kindle.  It is very easy to follow and has the recipes set up from the very first solid to more toddler type recipes.

I do not have a fancy baby food cooker to make the food. I just ended up using my basic food processor. I have heard it is also great to use a blender too.

I purchased a few containers for storing the food in the freezer to try them out. I first tried out two sizes of the OXO tot blocks for baby food. I love that they are microwavable. It makes it easy to go from freezer to baby pretty quickly. I have the 2 oz and the 4 oz sizes.

I tried these Fresh Baby trays last night for the first time. I like the size of these and think that it will allow me to not waste a lot of the food in the end.  I made the peaches and pears recipe from the 201 Organic Baby Purees book and put them in these. The two recipes filled each of these trays completely.  I used three pears and four small peaches.

My mother-in-law picked up the NUK food storage container at Wal-Mart for me the other day. I am going to try this out next.

The boys so far are fans of pretty much only sweet potatoes.  They are not fans of peas (like their mom), but I was surprised that they were not to happy to be eating carrots as well.

Here is Davis closing his eyes hoping we will stop forcing him to eat the carrots.

Hopefully once we get to fruits they will be a little happier at the dinner table.

  1. Megan I'm so glad you shared this because I think a lot of moms don't realize how easy it is to make baby food. I did it for all 3 of my kids, best decision ever. Keep on keeping on!

  2. You have perfect timing! Clare is almost 6 months old and Megan has been researching how to make your own baby food. Thanks for all the tips Megan!

  3. I bought the same book and OXO containers! The book has simple recipes and it's SOO easy to make this stuff. Your food goes a long way I've noticed. It doesn't take much. Beats paying $2.00 for organic pouches. My Lea, who's now 6 months, loves sweet potatoes and carrots. Not to fond of greens, but we'll keep working on it.

  4. Oh yes homemade is easy although I am sure anything in the kitchen with twins and a 4 year old is not a breeze. My eldest had the canned stuff and he was such a fussy eater as he went on to eat family meals the others except Madeleine who had some medical issues all took to family dinners well after home made. Poor boys feeding them those nasty carrots LOL (picture for the 21st)

  5. Oh good for you! Davis is adorable...even when rejecting carrots! I did make my own baby food when Will was little...32 years ago! (Thanks for the reminder!) Blender and icecube trays. Guess the process hasn't changed all that much!
