Watermelon Nightstand

I was recently given a few pieces of furniture from the home of a family member. I thought this sweet little table would be perfect next to Wynn's bed. She did not have any nightstands previously, and I thought this would work for her space if I changed up the color.

I spent hardly any time at all with this makeover. I grabbed a can of spray paint primer from a previous project and some Krylon Watermelon colored spray paint for the main color.  I used a bit of turquoise colored Valspar spray paint for the hardware. 

I cleaned off the table and let it dry. Then I sprayed it with the primer and let it dry. It then took approximately three coats and two cans of spray paint to fully cover this table.  

It is now in the perfect little spot next to Wynn's bed. Wynn asked that I spray paint her walls in this color too. I think she will have to discuss that with Rob. ;)

Waterfall Chest

About a year ago my co-worker gave me a beautiful waterfall cedar chest. He was moving items from another home, and had no use for it himself.  It sat in our unfinished basement until last weekend. Rob had an itch to redo a piece of furniture. It was a beautiful day to do it, and so he took advantage of the nap time that all the kids took at the same time. Unfortunately, I do not have a before picture to share. He got started before I could snap one of the chest.

Rob purchased some General Finishes paint and white wash for it. This was his first experience using this brand and we were excited with how it turned out. Thanks to Cassie and Sharon for sharing their experiences with it.  He painted the trim of the piece with the General Finished Millstone gray.  Then used the General Finished White Wash Wood Stain for the main sections of the chest.  The chest was pretty beat up from years of use, and so this really helped make it look a lot better.  Rob also sanded it quite a bit to give it a more distressed look.  The final step was to give it a coat of polyurethane.

We of course did not touch the beautiful cedar inside. This is going to be a gift for someone who recently bought a beach place. We figured the distressed white wash look fit with the rest of their home. They have many throw blankets around their house, and we hope this will be the perfect storage piece for them.

Pottery Barn Kids Inspired Play Room Table

Thanks so much to Bonbon Break for sharing our table.  I happened to hop on Craiglist the other day, and I had not been on there is a while. Usually there is not much for sale of interest where we live. But, on Friday I saw some preschool tables and chairs being sold at a church near by. I had always wanted to purchase one of the tables from PBK, but never had it in the budget to do so.

I couldn't pass up the table for twenty bucks and some chairs to go with it.  The table and chairs are both over 50 years old according to the director of the school.

Here is what they looked like as soon as we unloaded them from our truck.  Rob then sanded the entire table using a hand sander, wiped it with mineral spirits and then applied some gel stain. He painted the legs of the table and then used antiquing glaze over top of it to give it an aged look. This table is fifty years old, so it is pretty aged all by itself. Finally the top got a coat of polyurethane   

We are very happy with the purchase it was a total of $50 for all the chairs and the table, but I think it was worth it. We left the chairs alone for now, but may consider doing a similar treatment to them in the future.

Stereo Cabinet into Toy Box

Our Goodwill store was recently renovated and had a huge grand reopening over Labor Day weekend.  It was much more organized and had a lot more to offer.  Rob spotted this stereo cabinet for $20 and told me he was going to get it. He said it he wanted to turn it into a toy box for Wynn, and I was excited to get more storage for the growing toy collection.  Here is the cabinet after we brought it home. It was not in bad shape at all and I really liked the legs on it. 

The record player was still in tact and even had a Mel Tillis 45 inside. I had to ask my neighbor what those small records were called because I had forgotten. He said that really shows my age. 

Rob decided to sand it down and disassemble it completely.  Goodbye record player! He used the color Posh Red by Valspar, which we had used on a previous project for Wynn's toy locker.  We then added fabric in the spaces where the speakers were at first to fill it in.

Now we have a piece to match the Toy Locker that we completed for her a few months ago.
Then added a bit of fabric where the speakers were previously.  We had paint left over from the toy locker so we did not need to buy anything except the actual stereo cabinet.

It will be perfect for storing all these toys we seems to be accumulating around here.  Wynn has found it easy to slide the top open and reach in to get to her toys.

Adding Personality to a Bookcase

We had a bookcase that we purchased from Wal-Mart a few years back. It was pretty sad looking, and so we purchased a roll of wall paper from Lowe's and gave it some personality.  It's called Spanish Tile by Allen and Roth and is $21.00 for a roll.  We have plenty left over for other projects we can come up with too.We took off the cardboard backing of the bookcase very simply.  We just used spray adhesive to adhere the wallpaper to the cardboard panel on the back of the bookcase.

 I decided to use the bookcase next to the bar we have in our family room to display more of my glasses that we have.  It really makes everything stand out rather than blend into the black background.

 The top of the bookshelf is now home to my lamp from Marshalls, some wine bottle votives and a fleur de lis from Home Goods. 

Considering I had all the items in my house before this simple update cost only a few dollars because I only used a portion of the roll. I am excited to think of what else I can use the rest of the roll for in the future.

First Attempt at Glazing Furniture

My parents gave us one of the dressers that they received for a wedding gift almost thirty five years ago. Rob was interested in trying out an antique glaze on this dresser and another pine dresser we snagged off of Craigslist.  Unfortunately we only have before pictures of the first dresser because we forgot to take one of the one from Craigslist. The CL dresser was dark wood with lots of scratches all over it.

Here are the finished photos for both dressers. Rob used Valspar's antiquing glaze in the asphalt color and Valspar's Homestead Resort Olive.  Both dressers were sanded with a hand sander and then wiped down with mineral spirits to clean them up.  The hardware was left alone on both pieces for now. Then Rob put three coats of paint on both dressers and distressed them both by hand. Finally, he added the antiquing glaze by wiping it on and then wiping some of it off with a towel.  

The paint and glaze set us back about twenty dollars at Lowe's.  The cost to complete both dressers was around fifty dollars because we bought the second one on CL. Thanks for stopping by!

Wicker Rocking Chair by Amy & Chris

My husband spotted a wicker chair in one the guest bedrooms at my grandmothers house and loved it. He loves rocking chairs and I knew I could update it to fit our style. My grandmother was gracious enough to give the chair to us!


Here is the before in typical grandmother style:

I had some extra black spray paint laying around and went to town, it needed about 2 coats. I purchased a cushion at Pier 1 on sale.

After....

The total cost of this project was $30 and Chris finally got his rocking chair!
