Pretty Art Supply Organizer

Wynn has recently begun to color several times a day. This activity involves markers, crayons, colored pencils and anything else that you can make a mark with nowadays.  She loves to sit in her chair from Elizabeth & Co at the living room coffee table. Unfortunately the plastic container I had previously given her was hard to sift through, and it was overflowing which means the lid could not be put on.

I purchased this wooden box at Home Goods last year for $8 on clearance.  

I filled it up with six large mason jars.  Then I got to organizing the markers and other goodies. I have to admit that Wynn has kept it very well organized for the past few weeks. She must take after her mother. :)  It is perfect because now we do not have random supplies rolling off the table and everywhere around the room.

Hooray for organization! The best part is that this box can be used for anything. Maybe in the spring I can use it for flowers on the kitchen counter.

Much Needed Storage Project

This post is not about anything spectacular. However, I do love to be organized, so I may feel that this is spectacular after all. Rob is a PE teacher, and with that comes sneakers galore. These sneakers once inside our home are picked up by our labrador retriever and placed in various rooms in the house. We really must train Lance to place them in pairs rather than scattering the shoes without their partners.

We have a little space at the bottom of our steps in the garage that I thought would be a great drop off area. Rob used some scrap wood to build this shoe organizer and shelving unit.  It is now home to his shoes, and believe me this actually is not all of them. I think the man may have more shoes than me when it is all said and done.  Obviously I am nothing like Amy from While Wearing Heels. :)

He used some beadboard to line the back of the organizer. He also left some open shelves to fit either his snow boots in the winter.  Right now it is the place to store the balls that seems to not be able to find a place to call home other than the garage floor.  I picked up a metal basket from Target on clearance for $4, and figured I could use it for various things I want to drop in along the way.

All together it would have cost roughly $40 in wood to create this without our scrap wood pile. A lot more cost effective and larger than the comparitively priced organizers I have seen out there.  Another bonus is the available premade shoe organizers never seemed to fit the shoes that Rob had anyways. This one was built to fit his shoes perfectly.

Hair Accessories Storage

I have been drowning a sea of little girl hair accessories. Wynn has accumulated so many barrettes, bows, headbands and hair ties and they are everywhere. I had pinned several tutorials from great bloggers on making a headband holder out of oatmeal containers. I thought I was going to get on the bandwagon and make one. But, then I realized that Wynn would probably never put them back on there, and it may be difficult for her to use that kind of organizer so young.  This way the items will not fall off either.

I purchased these acrylic containers from Amazon.

I filled the containers up very quickly. Headbands easily fit into the largest container. The medium container is designated for small clips and pony tail holders. The smallest was the perfect size for her bracelets and watches.

I once again used my Silhouette Cameo to create some vinyl stickers for her containers. I placed a large "W" and some bows onto the containers. They seemed like they need a little something more, and so then I added the paper flowers to the two smaller containers.

Baby Organization

I saw a great idea on Unoriginal Mom via Pinterest that shared how to organize all the paperwork related to babies in one convenient place. I purchased some folders from Amazon and used an file organizer that I already had. This would make a great gift for any expectant family.

I attached the labels creating different categories suggested by Unoriginal Mom.

I cut out some flowers and the text on my Silhouette in light pink vinyl to jazz up the expandable file folder. I created this folder a about two weeks ago so the pink may or may not match the genders of the babise. 

You could easily recreate this gift for under $15 for someone that you know that recently had a child or is expecting. I know I am feeling a little more organized already.  Thanks so much for stopping by!

Burlap Baskets for Kitchen Storage

I picked up some great burlap baskets at the tag sale at Elizabeth & Co in Westminster, Maryland. I was not sure what I would use them for when I purchased them. I just knew that when I saw them in Sharon's preview post of the sale that I had to snag some.  I eventually decided to use them to hold Wynn's snacks in the kitchen.

Just to add a little something to them I added some flower embellishments that I found at Michaels. Now they have a little more personality.  It has been helpful having the treats in the baskets instead of boxes. It saves room in the cabinet too.  We got six boxes of fruit snacks and six boxes of granola bars in these two baskets.

Closet Organization and Lucketts

I am in the process of organizing a closet that we have really never used. I purchased some baskets in various sizes from Lowe's. I found they had the best deal for the size of what I was getting. The largest basket I purchased was around $9. I purchased three large and six medium sized baskets. I would have purchased more but I bought all that they had.

A few weeks ago I purchased this small wooden plaque from Michaels. I did not have a plan for it, but decided to use it to label my baskets.  This means I will be heading to Michaels soon to buy plenty more.  I painted it with some leftover paint from a previous project. After it was dry I added some vinyl lettering and attached it to the basket with some jute twine.  


Now, I only have to make about 11 more for the rest of the baskets I'll need in the closet.  

It is certainly a start towards keeping things organized, and especially for sheets which never seem to stay on a shelf very long. 

On another note, yesterday we went to Lucketts, VA for the Lucketts Market. I took a few pictures on my phone. I did get to meet up with some of the Hometalk ladies for a little bit as well. That was very cool!  I also was able to get Marian from Miss Mustard Seed to sign a copy of her book for me. She was so very sweet.  This year we were in and out pretty quickly with Wynn tagging along, but we did get a lot of ideas and saw a lot of wonderful furniture pieces.  

Wynn loved the popcorn and thought that the port-o-pots were beautiful.  That was her first experience seeing one and she loved them. The people walking by listening to her yell "these are so beautiful and just my size, Mommy" certainly got a kick out of that one.

Wynn insisted that we buy this to wash our dogs in.  Unfortunately I don't think it would hold 175 lbs worth of pups.

 I really loved all the goodies that you could find everywhere you looked.

 Wynn really wanted one of these metal W's. I think that she has quite a few w's already.

Finished Built Ins

The trim has been put into place and the built in cabinets and shelving are complete.  I guess now all I have to do is head to Home Goods and get some more stuff for our shelving.  We took full advantage of our former neglected space and spent the time watching the WVU football game on Saturday as you can tell from the pictures below.  All around this project cost approximately $1,200 and half of that went to the work the electrician completed.   Considering I cannot even buy a media console from Pottery Barn for that amount we are pretty happy.  Now there is plenty of toy storage available for Wynn to use.

Rob used piano hinges at the top of the shelving on the left to hide all of the cords coming from the basement and to the television. That way he can open the top of the ceiling in the shelving to access the cords whenever he needs to and not rip everything out of the wall.

Built In Cabinets and Shelving in Progress

Our family room has a lot of unused space for us at the moment.  We have been in our home for four years, and this wall has pretty much sat there. We framed some sports moments and left it like that. With the the exception of painting it in Valspar's Leather Satchel everything remained the same.

 Then one day in September Rob build this and said I'm going to build some built ins and shelving.  I was excited that he was going to do something with this unused space and give us toy storage which we badly need with a princess loving almost three year old. 

Rob constructed the cabinets using the Kreg system, and then bought the doors from Second Chance a restore in Baltimore City for around one hundred dollars for all seven doors we needed.

 We purchased premade counters from Lowe's and stained them.  Here is the other side of the built ins.

 We had an electrician come out and move our outlets up and add an outlet for our television.

Rob then began construction on the shelving above the cabinets. Our foundation sits out a bit from the wall about half way up, and so he used that as the starting point for the first shelf.

 Rob then attached some trim in front of the shelving to make them appear thicker and give them a finished look.

 In between the cabinets Rob used wood paneling to make a wall to attach the T.V.  He used a 2 by 10 behind it to attach the TV mounting piece to later on.  He then gave it a fresh coat of white paint.

 Here we are so far with the trim left to do and of course starting to fill up those shelves. Everything is haphazard for now. But, we (as in Rob) hopes to finish it up by tomorrow.  Then in a few weeks we are going to add a built in bench underneath the TV.

A Little Marshall's Find

I found this last night in the clearance aisle in my stop at Marshall's for only twelve dollars. I couldn't pass it up. We have a little ceramic bowl that is the catch all for keys, change and everything else. It was always messy and never organized.  I thought that this could help the problem through organizing and hiding things in these little drawers.

I took some scrapbook paper that I had laying around and added it to the back and the top of the organizer.

Then I took one of the many buckets that I got from the Target dollar section and added all my pens, pencils and markers.  I added some chalkboard vinyl to the front of it.

It fits perfectly underneath my goodwill find that I hung on the wall.
